Call nowThe short answer
If your locks work well and you only want the old keys to stop working, rekey. If the locks are worn, damaged or you want stronger or smarter hardware, replace them.
What rekeying does
Rekeying changes the small pins inside the lock so a new key works and the old ones do not. The lock on the door stays the same. It is usually the less expensive choice. See lock rekeying.
When replacing makes more sense
- The lock sticks, grinds or the key is hard to turn
- The lock is loose, cracked or was damaged in a break-in attempt
- You want a stronger deadbolt, a keypad or a smart lock
- You want new hardware that matches the look of the house
See lock change and smart lock installation.
One key for every door
Moving is a good time to fix a messy key ring. Compatible locks can be rekeyed to work with a single key.
Do not forget the other doors
Back doors, side doors, the garage entry door and the basement door all count. A new key on the front door does not help if an old key still opens the back.
